Looking for an easy gingerbread table runner pattern? This gingerbread table runner tutorial combines simple squares with cute gingerbread appliques for a quick, charming Christmas project. It is perfect for beginner quilters and only needs basic piecing and a bit of fusible appliqué. You can finish it in an afternoon and enjoy it all season long. I used the AccuQuilt Gingerbread Cookie Die and Go Bolt Electric to cut my shapes, but you can also trace your own template if you prefer.

Step-by-Step Instructions to Make a Gingerbread Table Runner
Make the Runner Top:
- Arrange your 5″ squares. I used 10 squares across and 3rows down, but you can adjust the length to fit your table.
- Sew the squares together in rows, using a ¼” seam allowance. Press the seams towards your main fabric so you can nest them in the next step.
- Sew the rows together, nesting seams, as you go. Press.
Prepare the Gingerbread Appliques:
- Follow the fusible web instructions and iron the fusible web to the back of your gingerbread fabric.
- Cut your gingerbread shapes. I used the AccuQuilt Gingerbread Cookie Die with my GO Bolt for quick cutting, but you can absolutely draw your own gingerbread man template and cut by hand.
- Arrange the gingerbread men on your pieced runner top.
- Fuse the appliques in place with your iron.
- Stitch around the edges of each applique. You can use a straight stitch, zigzag, or blanket stitch. Add embroidered eyes and buttons if desired.
Finish the Runner:
- Layer your backing (right side down), batting, and runner top (right side up).
- Quilt as desired. Simple straight lines or an allover meander work beautifully.
- Trim the edges and add binding, or use your preferred finishing method.
Tips for Success:
- Choose fabrics that feel festive to you. Traditional Christmas colors work great, but so do modern neutrals or bright fun prints.
- If you’re new to applique, practice the stitching on a scrap piece first.
