Size of Your Quilt
The size of your quilt will be determined by the width of your fabric. If your Jelly Roll strip width is 42”, you will get four 8½” squares, with the pattern. If the width of your fabric is 44” you will get five 8½” squares, with the pattern. You can also do the smaller size quilt with either width if you want to.
Above are the quantities based on the width of fabric you have chosen.
Please be mindful when you decide what size quilt to do, that the larger your quilt, the harder it is to quilt it.

Rail Fence Quilt
The different patterns you can create using the Rail Fence Quilt technique are endless and something you need to think about before you get started. If you do a Pinterest search you will see all the different variations you can achieve.
Grouping fabrics into four colors or fabrics will achieve the zig zag look. You can also use a range of fabrics within the four colors to give your quilt another look again. For example, you need 10 x 2½ strips in each color, you could get five different red fabrics and cut 2 x 2½ strips of each fabric.
Jelly Rolls
Jelly Rolls are an obvious choice because a lot of the hard work is done for you with the cutting, but it’s important to remember the fabrics in the Jelly Roll will determine the outcome.
A jelly roll has 40 x 2½ strips. If your jelly roll has 20 strips, you will need 2 rolls to make one true jelly roll.
Fabric off the Bolt
You will need 40 x 2½ strips, and they can be made up with any fabric you like. But when buying it off the bolt, don’t forget to ask for a little extra to allow for fabric that might not be cut straight.
If you want to do two strips in one fabric, I would ask for 7” – 5” for the two strips and 2” to allow for error.
Note: Examples of quantities are for Lap Quilt measurements
Batting
You will need batting bigger than the quilt top, allowing for a few extra inches around each of the sides.
Fabric Details
All fabric quantities above are 100% quilting cotton fabric, standard width 44”. If you choose to use something else for your backing, please note extra bulk can make it much harder to quilt.
