Fall Pumpkin Table Runner – Free Sewing Tutorial

My Fall Pumpkin Table Runner is the perfect way to bring a cozy, handmade touch to your home this season. Whether you’re decorating for autumn, setting the table for Thanksgiving, or just adding some seasonal charm to your space, this project is such a fun and satisfying make. It also makes a thoughtful and personal gift, especially for a Thanksgiving host or a friend who loves fall as much as I do.

In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through how to sew the table runner step by step. I’ll also show you how to take the same design and easily adapt it into matching placemats and pot holders, so you can create a beautiful, coordinated set for your fall table. Whether you make just one or go all out, it’s a great way to use up fabric from your stash and celebrate the season with something handmade.

This pattern uses a technique called Half Square Triangles, and we’ll be making them four at a time, quick and efficient!

And for anyone who isn’t a fan of binding, good news, we’ll be using the self-binding method. It’s much easier and saves time, making it perfect for a fast finish. If you’ve never tried self-binding before, don’t worry, I’ll walk you through it. You’re going to love how simple it is!

To Sew a Fall Pumpkin Table Runner, you will need

This project is the perfect scrap buster, it is made up of 2½” squares and the more fabrics used the merrier! Use dark tones of fabric for the pumpkins and light tones of fabric for the background. You will also need 4 x 4″ squares in dark tones and the same in light tones. My Fall Pumpkin Table Runner topper was made entirely with scraps of fabric I had on hand. But if you want to buy fabrics, I list below what would also work.

• 4 x 4″ squares in dark tones
• 4 x 4″ squares in light tones
• 5 x 2½” width of fabric dark tones for pumpkins
• 5 x 2½” width of fabric light tones for background
• 14″ x 42″ Batting
• 14″ width of fabric for backing and binding

Sew your pumpkins together individually as shown in the pic below, then sew the three together

To Make a Set of Two Fall Pumpkin Placemats, You Will Need

My matching placemats measure approximately 14½” x 18″.

• 5 x 2½” width of fabric dark tones for pumpkins
• 5 x 2½” width of fabric light tones for background
• 5 x 2½” width of fabric light tones for background
• 2 x 18½” x 22″ Batting
• ⅔ yard of width of fabric for backing and binding
