Nine Patch Quilt Block

Nine Patch Quilt Block

Welcome to the inaugural reveal of our Mystery Block of the Month for 2024! We’re kicking things off with a beloved classic, the Nine Patch Quilt Block. Renowned for its simplicity and versatility, the Nine Patch is a perfect starting point for quilters of all levels.

There are different ways to make a Nine Patch Quilt Block, and in this tutorial I’ll guide you through a specific method for creating a Nine Patch Quilt Block, focusing on how to place particular fabrics in exact locations within the block.

For the Nine Patch Quilt Block I recommend sewing with a scant quarter inch. A scant quarter inch is just a few threads off a quarter inch. This will help ensure your block measures 12½” x 12½”, when you are finished making it.

The scant quarter inch seam allowance is a quilter’s secret weapon for achieving precise block sizes. This seemingly minor adjustment makes a significant difference in quilting, where accuracy is paramount. By sewing just a few threads than a full quarter inch, you compensate for the fabric taken up with the thread and seam, ensuring that your finished block dimensions are exactly as intended.

For my quilt blocks, I’m using fabrics from two Ruby Star Society collections: Meadow Star by Alexia Marcelle Abegg and Rise and Shine! by Melody Miller. The distinct styles and palettes of these collections harmonize well together, showcasing the versatility of Ruby Star Society’s fabrics.

For thread I am using Konfetti by Wonderfil Specialty Threads, a 50wt Egyptian Cotton.

I started out with Stacey. Her tutorials are great. I haven’t started a new project in a long time. Stacey is good place to start.

    Hello Stacey,
This is my first time watching your tutorial. I’m impressed with how describe what you’re doing. Not too much chatter but enough to make it clear what’s happening.
