The Flying Kites Quilt is a quick and easy quilt to make as part of a donation quilt drive for National Foster Care Month in May 2022, you can find out more details here.
We have finished our donation quilt drive for this year, please make sure you sign up for my emails so you don’t miss out on our next donation quilt drive in May 2023. However you don’t have to wait until then, Comfort Cases will gratefully accept handmade quilts any time of the year.

For the Flying Kites Quilt, we will be doing the “Inside Out Technique” for the backing, which makes this a super quick and easy quilt to make because we don’t have to worry about binding.

This tutorial is free and everything you need to know to make the Flying Kites Quilt is listed here, including the link to my free YouTube tutorial.
The quilt will measure approximately: 51″ x51″

TO MAKE THE FLYING KITES QUILT YOU WILL NEED:
You can either use Fat Quarters (FQ) or fabric off the bolt for this quilt. Please note that directional fabric is going to end up facing different ways so depending on the pattern may not be suitable for this quilt.
FAT QUARTERS
10 Fat Quarters
Note: You might like to use 5 FQ in one design and 5 FQ in another (as pictured above) or 10 FQ in all different designs
OR
FABRIC OFF THE BOLT
1 ½ Yard EACH of 2 contrasting fabrics
PLUS
1 ½ Yards fleece fabric minimum width 55″ for backing

CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE FLYING KITES QUILT
From the Fat Quarters OR Fabric off the bolt cut:
(10) x 18″ x 18”
Note: Fat Quarters should be 18″ x 21″ but some fall short, in this case, cut them all the smallest size you have i.e. 17½” x 17½”
Please watch my video for full instructions on how to make the Flying Kites Quilt:
Don’t forget to print out my PDF (found here) and write a note to Comfort Cases to help us keep track of how many quilts we have donated.
For another perfect donation quilt idea please take a look at my Self Binding Strip Quilt, it measures 30″ x 40″ which is the ideal size to go in a Comfort Cases Bag for a baby here.
I can’t wait to make a Flying Kites Quilt with you to donate to children in foster care! Please leave a comment and let me know if you plan on joining me in making this quilt.
