Hello everyone! This week’s tutorial is a Super Easy DIY Scrunchie which is another quick, fun, and easy project that is perfect for a beginner learning to sew!
There’s no doubting that scrunchies have made a massive comeback. I remember making them when I was a teenager, and although I have found new techniques to make them, I still feel the way I made them all that time ago is the easiest way.
This week you will learn how to cut fabric with a rotary cutter, ruler & self-healing mat (click here for instructions). Rotary cutters can seem a bit scary, but trust me, if you master it, it will become one of your favorite tools.
The best thing about showing you how to make a template in last week’s lesson, is that you could also make a template for your scrunchie and any other sewing project. Sewing is really all about learning techniques and deciding which one works best for you.

TO MAKE A SCRUNCHIE YOU WILL NEED:
- Fabric 22″ x 3½”
- 8″ of ¼” elastic wide elastic
- Thread
- Rotary Cutter, Ruler & Mat
- Pins
- Sewing scissors
- Sewing machine
- Iron & Ironing Board/Mat
You can find out more about which tools I recommend over here.
Please watch my video for full instructions on how to make a Scrunchie.
INSTRUCTIONS TO MAKE A SCRUNCHIE
Cut your fabric to 22″ x 3½”
With the right side of your fabric facing down, fold one end over – by about ½”. Then pin in place.

With a ⅜” seam allowance sew along the entire edge, backstitching at the beginning and end.
Attach a safety pin to one side of the top edge. Push it down inside the scrunchie, all the way to the end, then turn scrunchie right-side-out.
Press.
Attach a safety pin to one end of elastic, then feed it through the scrunchie, holding on to the safety pin and the end of the elastic.
Place the raw end of the scrunchie inside the folded end.
Sew close to the edge to secure, backstitching at the beginning and end.
