Week 3 Basting your quilt

 
PREPARE

Gather your tools and supplies

 
TASK: PREPARE BACKING

100% COTTON QUILTING FABRIC FOR BACKING

 
 

Cut your 3½ yards in half

 
 

With your right sides facing together, pin your selvedge’s together

 
 

Sew together with generous seam allowance

 
 

Cut off selvedge’s if you want to

 
 

Press seams open and give a good iron

 
 

SHEET FOR BACKING

 
 

Fold your sheet in half, and then in half again, and place a fold to the left and a fold to the top

 
 

Cut your fabric at 33” so when it is opened up it is 66” wide

 
 

Turn your sheet around, so your fold is on the left side

 
 

Cut your fabric at 33”so when it is opened up it is at least 66” wide

 
 

Give the whole sheet a good iron

 
TASK: PRESS QUILT TOP

Give your quilt top a good press

 
 

Check all seams are sitting correctly

 
 

Cut loose threads that may show once quilted

 
TASK: BASTE QUILT

Layout your backing with the wrong side facing up

 
 

Secure to the floor with masking/painter tape, taut but not stretched

 
 

Layout your batting making sure it is smooth and wrinkle free

 
 

Layout your quilt top making sure it is smooth and wrinkle free

 
 

Pin your three layers together

 
 

Remove tape

 
 

Cut off excess batting/backing with a 2-3” clearance from your quilt top
